Join the OUTLAST journey.
What can the world’s oldest companies—and nature’s most resilient lifeforms—teach us about longevity?
Over the next 12 months, I’ll travel the globe—from Central American rainforests to centuries-old businesses in Europe and Asia—on a quest to answer one question: what allows a rare few systems to outlast?
My forthcoming book, OUTLAST will be published by Scribner, the flagship imprint of Simon & Schuster, home to legends like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, among many more, with translations planned across Europe and Asia.
OUTLAST is my journey to deconstruct and uncover the hidden principles of endurance, from 1,000-year-old family-run companies to resilient biological systems (ranging from sloths to ants to 5,000-year-old trees).
The heart of OUTLAST was born from a near-death experience, and forced me to consider a simple, searing question: what does it take to endure—and to really build for the long-term—in a world increasingly addicted to short-term thinking?
The more I follow this thread, the more unexpected—and beautifully counterintuitive—the answers become. If you’re curious about what truly lasts, I’d love for you to join me in the process of reporting and writing this book.
Subscribe to The Nightcrawler, my Friday newsletter, for behind-the-scenes access to this global journey—field notes, interviews (from CEOs to evolutionary biologists), and timeless lessons on how to build careers, relationships, businesses, and investments that have the potential to compound exponentially over time—and potentially forever.

ABOUT ME
I am the Managing Partner and Director of Research at Nightview Capital, a long-term oriented investment firm that runs a publicly-traded fund on the New York Stock Exchange, and the author of the forthcoming book OUTLAST: Lessons from the World’s Oldest Companies for an Era of Short-Term Thinking, to be published in 2027 by Scribner, the imprint of Simon & Schuster. It will also be published in the UK, as well as Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Brazil, and many more.
Before becoming a fund manager, I was a business journalist and winner of a SABEW Award with bylines in The New Yorker, Inc., The Atlantic, Newsweek, and others. Today, I write The Long Game at Big Think—a column exploring the ideas, strategies, and stories that drive longevity across business and life.
I am also the author of The Nightcrawler, a newsletter read by thousands of creatives, CEOs, investors, and curious minds around the globe.
I live in Portland, Oregon, with my wife, Rachel Hochhauser and our two young daughters, Beatrice and Isabel.
WHY OUTLAST
I’m writing OUTLAST because…
In 2023, I had a near-death experience that shattered my sense of time—and forced me to confront what survival truly means.
This book is my response: an invitation to look past the urgency of the now and rediscover the profound rewards of thinking long-term.
